Direct answer

Gene Therapy is the confirmed cure. Phalanx Pills reset infection progress but do not remove the virus. If you are infected, tell the squad immediately, search medical locations, and do not wait for severe symptoms before using available treatment.

How infection starts

A zombie grapple can infect a Responder. The chance rises as health falls, while losing the grapple mini-game or entering a grapple without stamina can trigger infection automatically.

Low health increases the infection risk during a grapple.
A failed grapple mini-game can infect the Responder.
Entering a grapple with no stamina removes a key defense against infection.

Recognize the stages

Official infection design describes Incubation followed by Onset. The first stage hides the condition, while the second adds symptoms that become harder for the player and squad to ignore.

Incubation shows no visible signs for a short period.
Onset can begin with coughing that nearby Responders can hear.
Visual and audio distortion becomes more severe as the infection advances.

Use the right treatment

The two medical options do different jobs. Pills buy time by resetting progress. Gene Therapy produces an antivirus after processing a blood sample and removes the infection.

Phalanx Pills can be taken late, but they do not cure the virus.
Gene Therapy is rare, map-based, and described as single-use.
The official update says the Gene Therapy device takes 30 seconds to create the antivirus.

Frequently asked questions

Do Phalanx Pills cure infection?

No. The official Infection Update says they completely reset infection progress without curing the virus.

What actually cures infection?

Gene Therapy. The device draws a blood sample and creates an antivirus that removes the virus.

How can I tell that a teammate is infected?

Coughing is an early audible sign after Onset. The infected player also experiences increasing visual and auditory distortion.

Can an infected player turn against the team?

Yes. The Steam description warns that an untreated dead body can rise against allies. Self-sacrifice was added partly to prevent that outcome when treatment is unavailable.
